We are staying at The Sambia Hotel on the Curonian Spit and taking day trips with our own personal tour guide up and down the coast, into the old German city of Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad) and visiting the area which was once Klein Engelau but is now a Russian military training base.
Many of the places we will visit are places that our mother enjoyed and wrote about in her book. From the streets of Konigsberg to the sand dunes of Rauschen. Hopefully we will find bits of amber on the Baltic seashore just as our mother did.
Our trip to Russia ends by following part of the route she took while escaping, from Klein Engleau to Heiligenbeil on the shore of the Frisches Haff (lagoon). Unfortunately we can go no further because that would mean crossing 20 kilometres over the open waters of the lagoon and ending up on Polish soil on the other side. In her book she refers to the escape which took six weeks as "The Flight" or "The Trek".

Who knew we had so many long lost relatives in Germany to visit! It's like winning the lottery! We will all come back to Canada fattened by the coffee and cake Germans love to serve their guests!
Oh, and the schnapps! Gesundheit!
Alesund, Norway
July 1 - 8, 2013
Our trip ends with a visit to Hans' daughter's home in Alesund on the west coast of Norway. Amy was born in Canada but has become a Norwegian. At least she looks Norwegian, if not exactly an actual citizen.
